A total of sixty one (61) Amerindian communities in Central, South Central, North, Deep South and South Pakararaimas have been impacted by the floods in Region 9 Guyana. As of June 23, 2011, water continues to recede in all of the impacted areas, with the most significant decrease in Central Rupununi which includes Lethem and its immediate environs. EVENTS:

There has been continuous heavy rainfall in Region 9 and in the Roraima State of Brazil resulting in the Rio Branco and Takuta Rivers overflowing their banks. As a result of this event, Lethem and its environs and other low lying areas of Region 9 have become inundated with flood water. These flood waters continue to rise and it has been reported that at its present level, it is the highest since 1973.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami, FL is advising that a tropical wave accompanied by a well-defined low pressure system is located about 1150 miles East-South-east of the Lesser Antilles as of 2:00 p.m. July 29, 2011. This disturbance continues to show signs of organization and environmental conditions are favorable for development during the next few days as the system moves west-northwest at about 15 to 20 mph.

Message: Early morning rains (April 12, 2011) cause flooding in Barbados, Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Virgin Islands is monitoring the weather conditions.

Event:
The Meteorology Office has advised that a low level trough in the vicinity of the Southern Lesser Antilles is creating unstable weather conditions. This has led to torrential rains in the Windward Islands. CDEMA has received reports of flooding in some areas of Barbados, Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Landslides have also been reported in Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Situation Report # 2 - As of Friday July 29, 2011 4:00 p.m.

The Event:
The Mathieu Dam collapsed yesterday July 28, 2011, at around 12:30 a.m. causing substantial damage to roads, infrastructure, agriculture and utilities. As a result, the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica has declared an ecological disaster area in the Layou Valley.

The Civil  Defence Commission in Guyana  has reported  extensive flooding in Lethem, St Ignatius and other low lying areas of  Region 9.  Continuous heavy rainfall in Region 9 and in the Roraima State of Brazil has resulted in the Rio Branco and Takuta Rivers overflowing their banks and more than 60% of Lethem inundated.
