Situation Reports
MESSAGE:
Tropical Storm warnings are in effect for Dominica, St.Kitts/Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat and Anguilla and the Virgin Islands as of 8.00pm Wednesday, August 22, 2012. A Hurricane Watch is also in effect for the Virgin Islands.
According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, as of 11:00 a.m. today (Friday, 3/8/12) the centre of Tropical Storm Ernesto was located near latitude 13.7 North and longitude 62.3 West or about 90 miles west of Saint Lucia. Ernesto is moving towards the west near 21 mph and this motion is expected to continue over the next two days. On the forecast track Ernesto will be moving across eastern and central Caribbean Sea during the next 48 hours. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph with higher gusts. Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 85 miles from the center. Little change in intensity is expected today but some strengthening is forecasted thereafter.

Event
The National Hurricane Center anticipated Tropical Depression # 7 to reach the Windward Islands late Saturday Night or Early Sunday Morning, August 11 and 12. The prediction was for the depression to intensify to a Tropical Storm and this prompted Tropical Storm Watches for the countries of Guadeloupe, Martinique, Dominica, St. Lucia, Barbados and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. By the 11:00 am advisory from the National Hurricane Centre TD#7 had degenerated into a tropical wave. Squally weather was still expected in the islands during the period.
According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, as of 5:00 p.m. today the center of Tropical Storm Ernesto was located near latitude 12.8 north and longitude 56.6 west or about 295 miles E of Barbados and the Windward Islands. Ernesto is moving toward the west-northwest near 22 mph and this motion is expected to continue during the next 48 hours. On the forecast track the center of Ernesto will reach the Lesser Antilles by late tonight or early Friday morning. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is possible during the next 48 hours. Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles from the center.
The public is asked to note the cancellation of the Tsunami Watch issued today, September 5, 2012 at 10.45 a.m for the Caribbean by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC). According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, as of 4:00 p.m. today (Tuesday, 7/8/12) the centre of Hurricane Ernesto was located near latitude 18.8 North and longitude 86.2 West or about 140 miles east of Chetumal, Mexico. Ernesto is moving towards the west-north-west near 15 mph and this motion is expected to continue over the next two days. On the forecast track Ernesto will be moving north of Belize across the Yucatan Peninsula during the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds are near 80 mph with higher gusts. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 35 miles and Tropical Storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles from the center. The minimum central pressure reported by an Air Force Hurricane Hunter Aircraft was 983 MB. Ernesto is now a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale. Some additional strengthening is possible before Ernesto reaches the Yucatan Peninsula.
According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, as of 5:00 p.m. today the center of Tropical Storm Maria was located near latitude 14.8 north and longitude 58.6 west or about 125 miles NE of Barbados. Maria is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph and this motion is expected to continue during the next day or so. On the forecast track the center of Maria will reach the Lesser Antilles early tonight and Saturday and be near the Virgin Islands by Saturday night. Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is possible during the next 48 hours. Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles mainly to the northeast of the center.
