Training for Emergency Shelter Managers and Trainers

Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos Islands, September 22nd, 2016 (DDME) - The capacity for managing Emergency Shelters in the Turks and Caicos Islands will be enhance later this month as the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME) will be hosting a Shelter Manager’s and a Training of Trainers Workshop. This two-part workshop is scheduled for September 26th – 29th September, 2016 at the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies Conference Room, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos. This workshop is part of DDME’s ongoing objective to build disaster resilient communities throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The Training of Trainers (TOT) and the Shelter Manager’s training will be conducted on 26th and 27th and 28th and 29th of September, 2016 respectively. The goal of the TOT process is to train new persons as trainers who will be able to assist the Department in training Shelter Managers throughout the TCI. For persons who were previously trained as trainers or Shelter Managers, this workshop will help to refresh their knowledge of their role and responsibility as it relates to the selection, preparation, maintenance and operational management of emergency shelters with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the required duties.

The Shelter Manager’s course is comprehensive; and will use both classroom activities and simulation exercises. Participants will learn about the Shelter Manager’s Roles and Responsibilities; how to setup the shelter, the importance of developing and maintenance a good Shelter Management team, the range of shelter activities that they are expected to participate in, the contents of a shelter, and how to keep records and maintain the rules of the shelter. Participants will also receive some background knowledge on the range of threats that would prompt the opening of a shelter, such as, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, or fire displacing a large resident population.

Upon completion of the training, it is anticipated that the capacity with regards to Shelter Management within the Turks and Caicos will be significantly enhanced. Trained persons will be able to operate an efficient and successful shelter, where all persons can co-exist and receive the care and attention they are seeking. To date, the DDME has trained a total number of sixty-four (64) persons throughout the islands.

Persons participating in the Workshop will be awarded Certificates on the successful completion of the four days training.

The facilitators for the workshop are Ms. Shania Armstrong and Mr. Cecil Jeffery, from the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies, British Virgin Islands (BVI).
