Incident Command System Training Workshop 9th – 10th June 2014

Grand Turk, TCI, June 6th, 2014, (DDME) - The Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies in conjunction with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) will be hosting an Incident Command System Training (ICS) Workshop in Providenciales on the 9th – 10th of June 2014, at the Department of Disaster Management Conference Room 1316 Customs Complex, Leeward Highway, Providenciales, beginning at 8:30am – 5:00pm.

The participants for the workshop have been drawn from TCI Fire and Rescue, Royal Turks and Caicos Police Force, Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs (DEMA), Ports Authority, Ministry of Health, Environmental Health and Airport Authority Fire Services, who are First Responders in the event there is an emergency.

ICS is a model tool for command, control, and the coordination of a response to an event and provides a means to coordinate the efforts of individual agencies as they work toward the common goal of stabilizing the incident and protecting life, property, and the environment. ICS uses principles that have been proven to improve efficiency and effectiveness in a crisis and applies the principles to emergency response. We live in a complex world in which responding to minor accidents and to large scale disasters often require cooperation among several agencies.

The Workshop therefore seeks to provide an introduction to the concepts and principles of ICS and will cover the following areas:

  • Introduction to the ICS
  • The ICS System Organisation
  • Incident Facilities
  • Incident Resources Management
  • ICS Assignments

The overall goal of the ICS training is to improve on the preparedness of the agencies to work with the system in large magnitude incidents where the ICS can be operationalised especially as it relates to natural and man-made events such as:

  • Structural and Commercial Fires
  • Cruise Ship, Aircraft and vehicular transportation accidents
  • Search missions and rescue operations
  • Oil Spill and HAZMAT incidents
  • Mass events such as celebrations, parades, concerts and public rallies
  • Visits by famous dignitaries
  • Mass shelter operations

The Training will be highly beneficial to the Turks and Caicos Islands particularly to senior officers, who will be called upon to carry out the Disaster Risk Management mandate in responding to emergencies.

The facilitator for the training is Mr. Peter Burgess, trained Regional Instructor with PAHO.
