Grand Turk, TCI, May 19th, 2014, (DDME)- The Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands is now in the process of reviewing and testing its Draft National Emergency Plans, which have been duly completed by the assigned consultants. A series of Stakeholder meetings will be held in Grand Turk on the 20th – 22nd May, 2014 where the following Plans will be reviewed and tested; the Maritime/Cruise Ship Accident Plan, Oil Spill Contingency and the Port Contingency Plans.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Tuesday, May 20 - Port Contingency and Oil Spill Contingency Plan Consultation at DDME/SPPD Conference Room starting at 9:00am. (presentation/draft plans)
  • Wednesday, May 21 - Maritime and Cruise Ship Accident Plan, Salem Baptist Church Hall, starting at 9:30am. (presentation/draft plans)
  • Thursday, May 22 - Table Top and Functional Exercise, DDME/SPPD Conference Room

The exercise on Thursday will see Government Departments, Business Entities and Non Governmental Organisations discussing Maritime related Emergencies in a relaxed environment. Agencies will be expected to function in their capacities carrying out their various roles and responsibilities. The functional aspect of the exercise will see the activation of the National Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) and the activation of an Incident Command Post at the Grand Turk Cruise Center. Communication between both centres will be tested.

The Grand Turk Carnival Cruise Center’s Carnival CARE Team will also be participating in the consultation and table top exercise and is among one of the major partners in the development of the maritime cruise ship accident plan and the port contingency plans.

Following the testing of these plans all six plans which are currently being developed by the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME) will be officially rectified by the Turks and Caicos Government.

The programme is being supported by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) under the Comprehensive Disaster Management-Harmonised Implementation Programme (CDM-HIP). Funding for CDM-HIP is provided by the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID), Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) and Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
