St. George's, Grenada, September 13, 2006, (NaDMA) - The St. George’s North East District Disaster Management Committee says it plans to stage more public activities geared at raising awareness.

The Committee’s Public Relations Officer Phillip Baptiste says members are encouraged by the turnout to the Motorcade last Sunday. “The response was immense. I think the message got to the people. I am looking forward to more initiatives like this” said Baptiste.
“A Hurricane is not the only thing that can cause a disaster. I think the other communities in the area should really get involved and have some of those and if we are to assist them I am sure we are quite prepared” he said.

The motorcade coincided with the second anniversary of Hurricane Ivan. It started on the Greens in Mardigras, making several stops before finishing at the La Mode Junction.
“So with us organizing to keep the motorcade in the area a lot of people appreciated that. Along the road we were getting good feedback except a few odd people who thought it was political”.

A Public Address system announced from the shelter list to how one must behave in the shelter as the motorcade meandered its way through the inner roads of St.George’s North East.

In May, as part of Disaster Awareness week, the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) staged a round the island motorcade with participation from the Bikers Club of Grenada.
However, the Motorcade did not pass through St.George’s North East an outcome that may have inspired last Sunday’s event.

“Before Ivan a lot of people did not take a hurricane or disaster as being serious. Anything can happen. People should really be prepared and be quipped for it and take it seriously” he said.

“The message we are trying to send is to raise the awareness of the people in the area. Of the things they need to have in stick. Where the shelters are to secure their house and environment”.
