Nominations open for Anguilla’s 2014 Annual Risk Reduction Recognition Award

The Valley, Anguilla, February 10th, 2014 (Department of Disaster Management) - The Department of Disaster Management, under the auspices of the National Disaster Management Committee (NDMC), is now accepting nominations for the 2014 Annual Risk Reduction Recognition Award. The NDMC in its continuing quest to build a safe nation is again partnering with Platinum Sponsor, Alliance Insurances Services, in recognizing outstanding and innovative initiatives and measures in the advancement of Disaster Resilience and Mitigation on Anguilla, by private/volunteer organizations.

The annual Recognition Award will be a monetary award and certificate of recognition, presented to individuals, groups or institutions for excellence in innovation, outreach and effective collaboration and significance in improving safe and risk reducing measures and activities in risk reduction in 2013.

According to Mr. Alwyn Richardson, Coordinator of the recognition award programme, awards and incentive schemes for Disaster Risk Reduction, this recognition can provide good models for replication, customized adoption and help sustain the drive of local government units and other stakeholders for more proactive and pioneering initiatives. The Department of Disaster Management's goal is to have a safe country and we need to work double time to ensure this. Award schemes such as these will be an effective tool to encourage communities and individuals that it is possible to minimize losses when different hazards such as health problems occur, because there are ways to build defenses.

Nominees can be an individual, agency or organization that has executed an effective community or national recognized program or set of activities with significant and successful tangible results. Nominations should describe the efforts sustained overtime which demonstrates clear benefits for the target communities.

Selection criteria and nominations forms can be found at the Post office, various Government Offices, Banks, hardware stores and public areas.

Nominations should be submitted by Thursday 27th February, 2014 as instructed on the nomination form. This will ensure timeliness of the selection process.

The Award will be presented on March 14th, 2014.
