CDEMA Information Note #1 - Hurricane Beryl as of 11:00am (AST) on July 06, 2018

MESSAGE: Hurricane Beryl forms over the far Eastern Atlantic and progresses west towards the Caribbean.

THE SITUATION:

Hurricane Beryl, the second (2nd) named storm of the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season, formed over the central Atlantic Ocean on July 05, 2018. According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, as at 11:00 am (AST) July 06, 2018, Beryl, a category 1 hurricane, was located at 10.7N and 46.5W about 1045 miles (1685km) ESE of the Lesser Antilles with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (130 km/h) and a minimum central pressure of 994 mb. The present movement of Beryl is west or 275o at 15 mph (24 km/h).

Additional strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days, and Beryl is expected to still be a hurricane when it reaches the Lesser Antilles late Sunday July 08 or Monday July 09. Weakening is expected once Beryl reaches the eastern Caribbean Sea on Monday July 09.Hurricane Beryl forecast track, July 07, 2018 - NHC

Beryl is a compact hurricane. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 10 miles (20 km) from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km). Interests in the Lesser Antilles should monitor the progress of Beryl, as hurricane watches may be needed for some of the islands by tonight.

Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) Weather Update

The Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) is closely monitoring Hurricane Beryl as it continues on its trajectory towards the Lesser Antilles. At present all indications are that Beryl, as a very small storm and as she moves toward the Eastern Caribbean, will encounter very unfavorable conditions, that could cause the system to weaken to a weak tropical storm or a strong tropical wave. In essence, this could mean heavy rains, thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds. The expected track is toward the Leeward Islands, towards Hispaniola and this will start late Sunday into Monday. The system is also moving very fast, all encouraging signs that the effects will not be prolonged.

Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) Actions

At present Hurricane Beryl poses no immediate threat to any of the CDEMA PS, however given its forecast track, it has the potential to impact the Caribbean on Monday 9th July 2018. Following are the regional preparatory actions undertaken to date:

  • The Regional Coordination Plan (RCP) has been activated as of 8:40 PM on July 05, 2018.
  • CDEMA Coordinating Unit (CU) is undertaking the preparatory actions in accordance with the standing operating procedures (SOPs) of the RCP.
  • CDEMA CU has notified the PSs and Regional Response mechanism (RRM) partners of the potential threat from Beryl.
  • CDEMA has scheduled a briefing for the RRM Partners and the CDEMA Participating States tomorrow, July 07, at 11:00 AM. CIMH will brief the partners on the potential hydro-metrological threat from Beryl, and the RRM partners will be afforded an opportunity to share their preparatory actions to inform the regional plan of action in response to a potential impact from Beryl on any CDEMA PS.
  • The pre-impact database for the countries within the forecast cone of influence of Beryl is being updated.

The CDEMA CU urges all Participating States and members of the Regional Response Mechanism (RRM) to continue to monitor the progress of this system. The CDEMA CU will continue to monitor the progress of Hurricane Beryl and provide updates as necessary.
