CDEMA Information Note #1 - Tropical Storm Irma - as of 5:00 pm on August 30th, 2017

MESSAGE: Tropical Storm Irma forms over the far Eastern Atlantic.

THE SITUATION:

Tropical Storm Irma, the ninth (9th) named storm of the 2017 Tropical Atlantic Hurricane Season, has formed in the central Atlantic Ocean. According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, as at 5:00 pm (AST), Wednesday August 30, 2017, Tropical Storm (TS) Irma was located 16.4N and 31.2W, about 430 miles of the Cabo Verde Islands. TS Irma has maximum sustained winds of 60 mph with a minimum central pressure of 1001 mb. Environmental conditions appear generally conducive for further development while it moves westward near 15 mph. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours and Irma could become a hurricane on Friday September 1, 2017.

 

Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) Weather UpdateTropical Storm Irma forecast track, August 30, 2017 - NHC
The Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) continues to monitor the progress of TS Irma and has advised that more detailed analysis will commence when the system reaches 45 degrees West. Based on current NHC projections, this may occur towards Monday September 4, 2017. CIMH will advise the Regional Response Mechanism partners should there be any significant development in the interim.

Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) Actions
At present TS Irma poses no immediate threat to any of the CDEMA PS, however given its potential to strengthen and impact the Caribbean, the CDEMA CU urges all members of the Regional Response Mechanism to monitor the progress of this system.

The CDEMA CU will continue to monitor the progress of TS Irma and provide updates as necessary.
