CDEMA Situation Report #2 - Tropical Storm Bret - as of 4:00pm on June 21st, 2017

MESSAGE

Tropical Storm Bret degenerates into a Tropical Wave while assessments are ongoing in Trinidad and Tobago.

THE SITUATION

According to the National Hurricane Center, Miami Florida, as at 5:00pm (AST) Tuesday June 20, 2017, the remnants of Bret were located near latitude 12.0 North, longitude 67.3 West. The remnants are rapidly moving toward the west-northwest near 22 mph (35 km/h), and this motion will continue during the next day or so.

 

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts. These winds are associated with squalls to the north of the center. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km) to the north of the center.

CURRENT STATUS - TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) reported that they are still in the process of undertaking the national level damage assessments and needs identification.

  • The NEOC is still activated
  • Flooding: Riverine flooding is more prolonged and widespread. A Riverine Flood Alert is in effect until 1800hrs today June 21, 2017
  • Casualties: None reported
  • Airports: Both airports are fully operational
  • Shelters: None open
  • Assessments: All Disaster Management Units (DMUs) are currently engaged in conducting Initial Damage Assessment (IDA) in their respective areas.
  • Water: 95% back in operation. 5% still out of water service; estimated 24 hours to rectify issue of turbidity.
  • Electricity: Supply is being restored. Some outages remain in Eastern, Northern and Southern areas.

REGIONAL READINESS ACTIONS – CDEMA COORDINATING UNIT

The Regional Response Mechanism (RRM) including the response specialised teams remain on standby to provide assistance, should a request is made. The CDEMA CU and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will convene a final meeting of the Eastern Caribbean Development Partner Group – Disaster Management (ECDPG-DM) tomorrow, Thursday June 22, 2017.

CDEMA CU continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
