Emergency management and Geo-spatial experts trained to use RADAR Products for disaster management

Bridgetown, Barbados, March 14, 2011 (CDEMA) - Emergency management personnel and geo-spatial experts in the CDEMA Participating States  are being trained in the practical use of satellites for emergency mapping. They are also reviewing RADAR products of the 2010 hurricane season as part of their preparations for improved access to real-time data and products during the upcoming season.

The 2-day training, information and review sessions are being hosted by the national disaster and emergency management organizations in the Virgin Islands, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Barbados and Jamaica this month, March 2011.

These sessions are associated with the Caribbean Satellite Disaster Pilot (CSDP) project No. 2 "Coastal Decision Support with Earth Observation".

The main objectives are to review the detailed satellite image (RADARSAT-2 ) maps that were produced and delivered rapidly by the Canadian team in the wake of the 2010 hurricanes Earl, Tomas and Nicole to local authorities of affected areas; to provide training to emergency management personnel and geo-spatial experts, concentrating on the practical use of RADARSAT and other high-resolution satellites for emergency mapping and interpretation of relevant geospatial products;, and to jointly document needs and requirements for upcoming cooperation during the 2011 hurricane season.

The Training sessions are supported by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), in coordination with CDEMA.
