Tacarigua, Trinidad and Tobago, April 27th, 2015 (ODPM) - The Office of Disaster, Preparedness and Management (ODPM) along with other supporting agencies continue to prepare the nation for any disaster that the country may face in the future. In wake of the 7.9 magnitude earthquake in the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, the ODPM urges all citizens to continue their efforts of preparedness and readiness for any possible emergency situation.
Citizens are reminded to prepare their disaster readiness kits with the emergency supplies such as drinking water, medication and flash lights. The full disaster checklist and more can be found on the ODPM’s website. The ODPM has also made it easier to access this information at the tips of the public’s fingers with ODPM’s new Disaster Ready Mobile Application. With this application users can view listings of emergency contact numbers including relief agencies and Regional Corporations, shelters listings across Trinidad and Tobago, as well as hazard specific safety information of what to do before, during and after any disaster occurs.
As the National Disaster Preparedness Office, the ODPM has a principle of coordinating humanitarian assistance through our local humanitarian partners such as Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. In cases where citizens would like to provide aid to displaced persons in the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, this can be done through several well established non-governmental agencies mentioned above. The ODPM will issue further updates on guidelines for public participation in offering assistance through our organization if requested and citizens are reminded to please contact our Customer Care Call Centre at 511 and check our website www.odpm.gov.tt for additional safety tips and preparedness measures for a disaster.
